Safdarjung Hospital Doc Commits Suicide; Medical fraternity in shock

A third-year postgraduate (medicine) student and resident doctor at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital who was reportedly battling depression has committed suicide. He was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his rented accommodation in south Delhi, the police said on Saturday.

A suicide note has been recovered from the spot which stated that he had been suffering from mental depression for the past two years. The deceased student has been identified as Jay Dipesh Savla (25) from Kandivali West in Mumbai.

The medical community is in shock by the demise of this young doctor.

"My heart aches for the sad demise of @JaySavla15. One really don’t know what’s going on inside our mind. I have heard that he was a very energetic , smiling personality. As doctors we often show ourselves to be super strong and avoid consulting our friends or psychiatrist for mental health. All the members of @FAIMA_INDIA_ pay sincere tributes to him & we stand together with the family members in this painful time. About the toxicity in VMMC.. This is not the right place to talk about it. But professors , consultants and every senior should understand that Change can only be brought if we collectively avoid all this.

Work life balance is very important. No-one should suffer like this," reads a tweet by FAIMA National Chairman, Dr. Rohan Krishnan.

"#Heartwrenching. India lost a Brilliant mind Doctor!Dr JAI SAVLA 3rd year Medicine PG resident Safdarjung hospital (Delhi) died due to #suicide. #RIP," reads a tweet by All India Medical Students' Association.

"India lost a Brilliant mind Doctor!Dr JAI SAVLA 3rd year Medicine PG resident Safdarjung hospital (Delhi) died due to #suicide," said another tweet. He was Top level Black belt martial artist, International rated chess player along with active presence on all the social issues!," said another tweet.

In another similar tragic incident, a few days ago, a young postgraduate medical student in Kerala committed suicide as her boyfriend allegedly called off their wedding after the doctor's family failed to meet their dowry demands. It has been reported that Shahana was found dead at her rented apartment.
