Safdarjung Hospital's Associate Professor in neurosurgery gets arrested

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Manish Rawat, the Associate Professor in the department of neurosurgery at the Safdarjung Hospital, one South Delhi based businessman and three middlemen in the "cash for treatment" racket.

As per the TOI report, the accused doctor used to demand money for giving medical advice and conducting surgery. Reportedly, in three recent instances, he took bribes of INR 1.15 lakh, INR 55,000 and INR 30,000 from attendants through middlemen.

The arrested businessman Deepak Khattar is the owner of Kanishka Surgicals in Jungpura and three middlemen have been identified as Avnesh Patel, Kuldeep and Manish Sharma.

The modus operandi was such that the middlemen used to tell attendants of the patients on behalf of the doctor that they could manage an early appointment if they paid a bribe and if they agreed to procure the instruments required for the surgery from a particular shop.

The money was being collected either in the form of cash or sent to given mobile numbers linked to the bank accounts of Manish Sharma and Kuldeep. Both of them were the employees of the businessman. After the money used to be paid, Dr Rawat used to decide the time of surgery.

CBI is investigating offences ranging from the demand for bribes from poor people for treatment to overbilling and money laundering.
