Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences to open surgical skills lab in Srinagar

Sher-I-Kashmir Institute Of Medical Sciences and India Medtronic Private Limited have joined hands for a new surgical skill lab in Srinagar.

Sher-I-Kashmir Institute Of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) and India Medtronic Private Limited have joined forces for a new surgical skill lab at SKIMS, as per Business Wire India. The skill lab will support the surgeons to overcome the challenges in getting laparoscopic expertise.

Chief Secretary UT, Jammu & Kashmir, Arun Kumar Mehta said, “Lab will help students and faculty of SKIMS to train themselves on MIS in Institute only rather than travelling to outside state. SKIMS is a pioneer in producing highly skilled medicos who have made a mark at global level and appreciated SKIMS administration for making available technically advanced infrastructure to benefit students which eventually improves patient care.”

To support the budding surgeons improve their expertise in the surgical field, the surgical skill lab will feature airway management systems, endotrainers, and laparoscopic suturing stations. The skill lab intends to offer an understanding of minimally invasive surgery to the upcoming surgeons. Such a surgery promises faster recovery, reduced hospital stay, an overall reduction in hospitalization cost, less burden on healthcare infrastructure and improved patient outcomes.

The main objectives of the partnership

• Training the surgeons by replicating real-world environments. 
• Using best teaching methods and state-of-the-art technology to enhance their skills and help them in adopting minimally invasive ways of surgery.
• The training will support the young and residents surgeons in improving their skills in laparoscopy, basic and advance suturing, and hand-eye coordination for laparoscopy.
• The partnership will add value to the health systems in the J&K region by training future surgeons. It will also increase patient access to innovative therapies in the future.
