Shift all 258 MBBS students of Chintpurni Medical College to other institutes: Punjab and Haryana HC

The Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Punjab government to shift all 258 students of Chintpurni Medical College in Pathankot to other colleges.

Chintpurni Medical College in Pathankot College was established in the year 2011 and closed in 2016 for not providing the basic infrastructure requirement.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) conducted an assessment of the college on December 16, 2015, February 25, 26, 2016, and March 16, 2016, and the assessment reports were considered by the Executive Committee of MCI in its meeting held on March 22, 2016. There was a serious lack of infrastructure including a deficiency of faculty - 100 per cent, a shortage of residents 100%, and many more.

The college managed to get permission to accept admissions for the MBBS batch again in 2021 and the permission continued in year 2022. Thereafter the permission was withdrawn again due to lack of infrastructure and facilities. The students who were pursuing MBBS from this college wanted to shift to other recognised colleges and hence they filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

At least 149 students, including 15 from Ludhiana had filed a writ petition in the high court in this regard. The first writ petition was filed by 51 students in July 2023 and later a group of 65 students filed another writ petition. The petitioners wanted to shift to any other recognized, affiliated and approved medical college within the Punjab or to any other medical college having affiliation with Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), as reported by Hindustan Times.
