SMS Medical College Doctors on Strike Against Suspension of 3 PG Medical Students

The three suspended doctors are PG students of the 2021, 2022 and 2023 batch of obstetrics and gynaecology department at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College. The resident doctors communicated to the principal that no PG/Superspecialiaty student will resume their duties and enter the hospital till their demands are met. 

Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College resident doctors are on strike. The doctors are protesting against the suspension of three PG medical students who have been debarred for delivering a baby outside the labour room within the hospital premises. 

Doctors under the Jaipur Association of Resident Doctors (JARD), SMS Medical College have shown their outrage against the suspension and have demanded that the suspension be withdrawn otherwise no PG/Superspeciality student will resume their duties and enter the hospital premises. 

What Has Happened?

During last week, a pregnant woman visited Kanwatia Hospital for the delivery of her child. Allegedly, the staff did not admit her to the hospital and denied to admit her. Consequently, she had to deliver her baby on the hospital premises but outside the labour room. Reportedly, the woman had a very low haemoglobin level that caused high-risk pregnancy, as reported by Medical Dialogues. 

Rajasthan Health Department, consequently, investigated this matter and suspended three resident doctors on the grounds of 'negligence and insensitivity'. Further, the health department released a show cause notice to the medical superintendent in this matter. Furthermore, the panel asked them to submit a detailed explanation of why their suspension shall be revoked and why no actions should be taken against them. 

The students who have been suspended are Postgraduate students at the obstetrics and gynaecology department of the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College.  

Consequently, the resident doctors have submitted a written application to the principal of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College. The student association have mentioned that all PG students are 'demoralised' because of 'unilateral action by the committee' against innocent PG students.
