National Medical Commission (NMC) has been directed by the Supreme Court to submit details of the stipend paid to MBBS interns in all medical colleges. NMC shall submit stipend details for all states within a period of four weeks.

Supreme Court Order For NMC

The Supreme Court of India, in a civil writ petition, has directed the National Medical Commission (NMC) to submit details regarding stipends paid to interns by medical colleges in all the states. The two-judge bench, including Sudhanshu Dhulia and Prasanna Bhalachandra Varale, JJ has asked the National Medical Commission (NMC) to submit the stipend details of medical colleges within a period of four weeks.

When Did the Allegation Started?

The Supreme Court received the allegation back on September 15, 2023, that the Army College of Medical Sciences was not offering stipends to any of the medical interns engaged in the practice. Further, it was also alleged that almost 70 percent of the medical colleges were not paying an equitable stipend to medical students.

The court has instructed the NMC to file a tabulated chart and explain whether the allegation of non-payment of stipend by 70 percent of the medical college was correct or not. Furthermore, the NMC was also asked whether or not necessary steps were taken to ensure compliance regarding the internship payments.

The Supreme Court, on April 1, 2024, said that the details submitted by the National Medical Commission (NMC) were not complete as per the directions issued on September 15, 2023. Hence, NMC shall submit the details of the stipend paid to interns by medical colleges in all states within four weeks.

The notification read, “The details which have been given by the National Medical Commission is not of the entire medical colleges in the States and therefore, the direction given by this Court in its order dated 15.09.2023 at para 10 had not been complied with. Let the same be done positively within a period of four weeks from today.” As reported by Medical Dialogues.
