Supreme Court on NEET UG 2024: CJI Orders IIT Delhi Committee to Investigate Exam Question, Hearing to Resume Tomorrow
The Supreme Court has sought an expert opinion from IIT Delhi to resolve a contentious question in the NEET UG 2024 exam. The court has requested IIT Delhi to form a team of three experts to evaluate the question and submit their opinion by July 23, 12 noon.
The Supreme Court Bench, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, resumed its hearing on the NEET UG 2024 case today, addressing serious allegations of a paper leak. The Chief Justice has ordered IIT Delhi to form a committee to investigate a contentious question in the exam. This case impacts nearly 24 lakh students who appeared for the NEET UG 2024 exam. The hearing is set to resume tomorrow.
In a previous hearing on July 18, Chief Justice Chandrachud deferred the matter to July 22, requesting a copy of the Bihar police report. The court is currently examining over 40 petitions, including calls for the exam's cancellation, a re-test, and an investigation into alleged irregularities.
The bench, comprising Chief Justice Chandrachud, Justices J.B. Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra, emphasized the gravity of the situation. Chief Justice Chandrachud raised concerns that the NEET paper leak might have occurred well before the transportation of the question papers to the banks. Contrary to the government's stance that the leak happened on the morning of May 5, limited to small areas in Bihar and Jharkhand, the CJI suggested that if the leak took place on the night of May 4, it must have occurred before the papers were secured in the banks.
"If the NEET paper leak has taken place on the night of May 4, it has not taken place in the vault of SBI or Canara Bank. The leak must have happened much prior to the transportation of the question papers to the banks," stated CJI Chandrachud. He also highlighted the issue of professors not being utilized as problem solvers, unlike students who are frequently engaged for this purpose.

The hearing is set to resume tomorrow, with submissions expected from the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Central Government. Both entities have previously denied any widespread leak, with the NTA asserting that videos of allegedly leaked papers are fabricated. The Union Government cited data analytics from IIT Madras, which indicated a typical bell-shaped curve in the marks distribution, suggesting no irregularities.
On July 18, the Supreme Court directed the NTA to publish the NEET UG 2024 results on their website, ensuring anonymity by masking candidates' identities city-wise and center-wise. Following the court's order, the NTA published the results on July 20.
