Supreme Court to hear Ukraine returned medicos' case on November 29

The future of scores of Ukraine-returned medical students depends on Supreme Court's judgement on the plea asking for accommodating them in Indian medical colleges. The next hearing will be on November 29 2022.

Centre has told the apex court on Tuesday that out of a total of 15,783 Indian students enrolled in medical universities of Ukraine, 14,973 candidates are undergoing online classes conducted by concerned medical varsities.

A total of 640 students are attending offline classes in Ukraine and 170 students though enrolled with Ukrainian universities are pursuing their education at partner universities in other countries under an academic mobility programme. Moreover, 382 students applied for academic mobility but their applications were not accepted either by the Ukrainian university or the receiving partner university, because of various reasons including non-payment of fees, poor academic record or non-availability of free seats, said the Centre, as reported by Deccan Herald.

When Shiksha spoke to Gourab who is from West Bengal and currently pursuing MBBS from BSMU Chernivtsi, he said, "We are facing tremendous problems, till date we don't know about the validation of online classes, practical exposure is missing, we don't know when and how the war will stop. what will be the Economic/Trading/exchange relationship between the two countries we are very worried. Some students had already started moving back to Ukraine risking their life even after being prohibited from Indian Embassy as we want our degree, and this will be a sure shot case of suicide if anything happens to us we will hold the GOI and NMC responsible for it."
