Tamil Nadu Medical Education: TN Seeks NMS Approval for Extra 550 UG, 70 PG Seats

TN state has requested for NMC approval to increase 50 MBBS seats each for its 11 new medical colleges along with 70 postgraduate seats in 23 different specialities across 13 medical colleges in the state.

Tamil Nadu State Health Department has requested the National Medical Commission to increase 50 MBBS seats each in their 11 medical colleges in TN state that commenced in the year 2021. If ratified, Tamil Nadu state will increase medical seats in 36 government medical colleges with 550 MBBS and 70 PG seats. Reportedly, TN state has requested NMC approval to increase a total of 550 MBBS seats in 11 new medical colleges along with 70 postgraduate seats in 23 different specialities across 13 medical colleges in the state.

Previously, NMC has granted approval for new medical colleges in Tamil Nadu state in order to ensure each district has at least one medical college and 1650 new MBBS seats were added to Tamil Nadu state crossing the 5000+ seat benchmark in the government reserved UG medical seats. Among all PG specialities, the highest demand is for Anaesthesia and Gynaecology, followed by four seats in Paediatrics. as reported by Medical Dialogues. 

TN state is among the states with the maximum number of medical colleges. With each district having a medical college, the government is ensuring govt colleges are equal to private and self-financing medical colleges. As per the TOI report, out of the 76 medical colleges in the state, the health department runs 36 colleges. The remaining 38 are self-financing colleges, private universities and deemed universities in the state. Meanwhile, an order requested six collectors to identify land parcels in their districts for the commencement of new colleges.
