The Thane municipal commissioner has suspended nine students of the Rajiv Gandhi Medical College for ragging freshers at the college's hostel, an official release said.

"The action was taken following a complaint and as per the Prevention of Ragging Rules," said the release. The college is run by the Thane municipal corporation.

The anti-ragging committee of the college conducted an inquiry and based on its report, the municipal commissioner Abhijit Bhangar took action, as reported by Republic World.

As many as 9 students were found guilty in the probe and they were evited from the hostel and suspended for one academic year. UGC had recieved a complaint about the incident in September and told the college management to take appropriate action.

The recent death of a first-year undergraduate student from the Bengali department at Jadavpur University (JU) in Kolkata, who allegedly fell from the second floor balcony of the main boys’ hostel on the intervening night between August 9 and August 10, has raised concerns about the cases of ragging.

UGC has revealed that in the past five and a half years, as many as 25 students have died by suicide after being subjected to ragging.

The investigation in the Jadavpur University ragging has revealed startling facts about the incident such as bringing liquor for seniors', washing seniors' clothes and much more.
