Ukraine returned medical students in Kerala demand admission in India

Ukraine returned medical students in Kerala are protesting for admission to medical colleges in India. The students staged a protest along with the medical students pursuing MBBS from China universities. The protest was under the banner Foreign Medical Graduates’ Parents’ Association demanding government intervention in the continuation of their studies.

While as many as 3,000 such students reached Kerala from Ukraine but they and their parents are stressed as the students' studies have been disrupted due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. The Central government is also finding out ways to facilitate the continuation of studies for these students. Meanwhile, the students are demanding admission to Indian medical colleges.

A group of medical students from Ukraine addressed a press conference in Ernakulam on Saturday, putting their demands ahead of the authorities.

“Though the university is offering us online classes, there is no assurance about what will happen next as our teachers are attending the online sessions from bunkers. We request the authorities here to admit us into medical colleges in the country as we will not be able to go back to Ukraine in the near future,” said Anikha Thomas, a third-year student of Bogolomets National University in Kyiv, as reported by OpIndia.

Students want remedial measures before annual exams

One of the students also said that if the remedial measures are not taken before the annual exams which happen in March-April, it will result in a loss of the academic year. These students are also demanding admission to government colleges as the private medical colleges' fees in India is too high.

“As we will not be able to meet the high fee structure in private medical colleges, we urge them to permit our children to complete the course paying the fee for government merit seats,” said a parent during the press conference.
