To increase MBBS seats by 1400 pending approval from the National Medical Commission, Uttar Pradesh is planning to add 14 new medical colleges in 2024-25.

The state medical education department has filed an application with the National Medical Commission (NMC) for inspections of the campuses.

“Physical verification of the infrastructure on the 14 campuses is expected any time. We have submitted an application and deposited the fee for the same,” said a senior official of the medical education department, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The department has started the process for appointment of faculty members at the proposed colleges and the process for appointing up to 50% of faculty positions is being done, including the principal.

New medical colleges are scheduled to open in various districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Kushinagar, Kaushambi, Sultanpur, Amethi, Kanpur Dehat, Lalitpur, Pilibhit, Oraiya, Sonbhadra, Bulandshahr, Gonda, Bijnor, Chandauli and Lakhimpur Kheri.

Currently, there are 3,828 MBBS seats in government colleges and 4,700 seats in private colleges. In the year 2023, Uttar Pradesh introduced nine new colleges.

Moreover, there will be 446 positions for Senior Residents, Junior Residents and Medical Officers, and 110 posts each for Chief Pharmacists, Dental Technicians, Pharmacists and non-technical staff.
