We are trying to increase students' exposure in Clinical Subjects, says Principal DJAMCH

Divya Jyoti Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital is offering education, research, and patient care in Ayurveda. We got in touch with Dr Rajesh Sharma, the Principal of this medical institute and got to know about the college and career options after completing courses from here.

Here are the excerpts from the interview:

Q: What are the career options after doing BAMS from Divya Jyoti Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital?

A: There are so many career options after completing BAMS. The students can open their clinics, they can go for postgraduation MD and further studies in surgery also. They can join government as well as private jobs, they can also open their hospitals. So, there are plenty of options available for the students. No student will face any problems and everyone will definitely get a job after the course.

Q: What are the research areas of your institute?

A: We are doing many trials on different diseases like diabetes, hypertension and multi-mental disorders. In one study we are using Swarna Prashan. It is a special formula which acts as an immunity booster. It is being given to the paediatric patients. You will be surprised to know that at a time when in Gorakhpur there was an epidemic known as Japanese encephalitis, we used the Swarna Prashan in the proper manner and we eradicated this problem. Now, you will see that there are minimal or hardly any cases of Japanese encephalitis in the Gorakhpur area. It was made possible with the use of Swarna Prashan.

Q: What are your plans and vision to make the college better in terms of education?

A: To improve the education in our institute, we are trying to implement various modern techniques in the classrooms, we are increasing experience of students in clinical subjects by posting them to different hospitals other than our hospital and using modern technology including the modern diagnostics. The idea is that the students should get better knowledge and better exposure.

Q: How pandemic affected Divya Jyoti Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital and what are the changes you are observing after two years of the pandemic?

A: Nobody was spared from the effects of the pandemic and we were also affected, the classes went online and when the situation improved a little bit, we started offline classes. Our hospital was taken by the government for Covid treatment for a period of two years. So, it was a difficult time for us but now it is good going.

Q: What challenges did the students face during the lockdown period?

A: Students were also getting demotivated, so we used to conduct motivating lectures and communicate with them from time to time. The practicals were getting affected as they can not be taught in online classes.

Q: Recently, WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine has been established in Gujarat to position AYUSH systems across the globe. It is the first and only global outposted Centre (office) for traditional medicine across the globe, how do you see the development?

A: That’s the real power of Ayurveda. Even during pandemic, everyone was looking at Ayurveda with great hope because there was no treatment available in any of the system of medicines. Everybody was only trying to boost the immunities and Ayurveda has more better solutions in this situation. You might also know that in many Covid centres initially the government was not allowing only Ayurveda treatment for the patients, it was only allowed in supportive measures but later on when the government saw that there was no positive effect of any system of medicine especially the allopathic medicine then they allowed and saw the excellent results.

In the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and in other parts of India, they got very good results, and there was no mortality. That’s why WHO saw the significance of the traditional methods of treatment especially Ayurveda which resulted in a winning situation for Ayurveda. Now, it is a globally accepted system of treatment. This system has existed for more than 5000 years now. WHO now recognized the importance of the Ayurveda system and clearly acknowledged it, which is a positive thing for Ayurveda.

After the Covid pandemic, the world is looking towards this system of medicine. The acceptance is not only in India but worldwide. Ayurveda is also helping in managing the post-Covid situation like those suffering from diabetes, hypertension, or cardiac disease, for them situations are still not normal and they are facing difficulties but with the help of different Ayurveda therapies, they are much better. So, everybody is looking towards Ayurveda and we are serving well not only in India but to world.
