Mumbai University Exams 2022: Days after several students took to Twitter and posted their concerns over autonomous colleges planning to hold the Mumbai University Exams 2022 offline, the Joint Director of Higher Education (Mumbai Division) has now made an announcement to ease their troubles. The Joint Director of Higher Education has urged the autonomous colleges to conduct the final year exams in online mode.

Many of the autonomous colleges in Mumbai had decided to hold exams offline, but have been facing opposition from students. The department has now urged these autonomous colleges to hold exams online as Mumbai University has decided to do it. But the directive is not binding. City colleges such as Mithibai, St Xavier’s, Jai Hind, NM and Sophia’s have decided to hold exams offline after two years. Students from these colleges are opposing offline exams, some of them have approached the higher education minister with their appeal.

“Since the university is holding exams online, there will be disparity in marks. They will not be tested on common grounds. To ensure there is no academic loss to them, we are requesting these colleges to hold exams online,” said joint director, Sonali Rode, adding that they cannot compel them as these colleges have academic autonomy.

She further added that students had approached the higher education minister Uday Samant too and he has directed me to reach out to these colleges.

“We were okay with offline exams, if the university also decided it. But now we are getting an unfair deal. With comparatively lower scores we may lose out on postgraduate seats of our choice,” said a student, while adding that they were also informed late about the offline exams.

“The academic calendar has been delayed in the last two years due to the online exam and unlike online exams where results are immediately announced, offline exams will once again lead to delay in announcement of result. Why should some of us have to wait for results while our fellow students from other colleges already have results in hand? All colleges need to work in tandem during exams,” said a student of Mithibai College, Vile Parle.

Some outstation students also raise their concern of now finding temporary accommodation. Mumbai University had earlier also released the Mumbai University Exams 2022 guidelines for the upcoming exam.
However, Principals said Uniform Statutes framed under Section 72 (10) of Maharashtra Public Universities’ Act, 2016, allows them “to evolve methods of assessment of student’s performance, the conduct of examination and notification of results”.
“UGC gave us autonomy to raise academic standards. Any such directive cannot be legally binding on us,” they said.
