NEET PG 2022: SC tells aspirants to ask Centre's direction on extension of internship deadline

The top court of the country has refused to interfere in the extension of the internship deadline plea by NEET PG 2022 candidates and has asked the aspirants to seek the Centre's direction on this matter.

There was a plea in the Supreme Court filed by NEET PG 2022 candidates seeking an extension of the May 31 deadline to complete the mandatory one-year internship, the court has asked the aspirants to make a representation before the Centre for the extension of the deadline.

The top court has said that it is a policy domain and the aspirants must make a representation before the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) for seeking extension of the May 31 deadline. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Surya Kant, and DY Chandrachud has said that looking at the hardship faced by the aspirants, MoHFW may decide on the representation within one week from the date of its submission and also the bench refused to express any opinion on the issue at this state.

Petitioners' counsel Mukul Rohatgi said that though the examination has been extended there is one important criterion that needs to be looked into which is the students appearing for the NEET PG 2022 must have completed a one-year mandatory internship by May 31, 2022.

The bench said, “This May 31 deadline can be extended by a month or two. Suppose, even if we extend the May 31, deadline by a month or two, there may be a group of students who still miss out on the one-year deadline. It is more of a policy decision, let the government consider your representation”, as reported by NDTV.

NEET PG 2022 revised schedule

Earlier, NEET PG 2022 was scheduled to be held on March 12 but now the exam date is deferred by six to eight weeks, and it will now be held on May 21. The online application window's deadline for NEET PG 2022 has been also extended from February 4 to March 25 till 11:55 PM. 

The candidates will be able to edit the application form between March 29 and April 7, 2022. The admit cards will be made available from May 16 and the results will be announced on June 20.
