NMC allows transfer of KUHS MBBS students
The National Medical Commission has allowed transferring MBBS students of Kannur Medical College to other colleges due to poor facilities at the institution.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has written to the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) to allow the university to go ahead with the transfer of MBBS students of Kannur Medical College to other colleges due to poor facilities at the private institution.
The letter reads, "NMC has considered the plight of the students and it has been decided by NMC, in the best interest of petitioners and similarly affected students of the same college, that the petitioners along with other affected students shall be transferred to other medical institutions in the state as per availability of seats in various colleges of the state."
The inspection report of the college submitted by the KUHS showed that none of the departments of the Kannur Medical College was functioning, no patients were admitted to the hospital and no procedures were being conducted and it would not be possible for MBBS students to complete a qualitative internship at the hospital.
NMC's decision followed HC order
On May 31, the high court passed an interim order directing the NMC to consider the transfer of MBBS students as a one-time measure while considering a petition filed by six students who sought permission to get their compulsory rotating mandatory internship (CRMI) to other hospitals.
NMC has directed KUHS to intimate it about the transfer of MBBS students to other medical colleges in the state.
