No Plan to convert Panjab University into central institution: Central Govt
Earlier in May this year, The Punjab and Haryana high court had directed the central government to consider the conversion of PU into a central university.
The Central Government has clarified its stand on the conversion of Panjab University into a central university. The Central Government has no plan to convert PU into a central university.
The central government while replying to a question in Rajya Sabha stated that the government has taken a policy decision not to convert state universities into central universities.
“As regards conversion of State Universities/colleges into Central Universities, this Ministry has taken a policy decision not to convert such Universities into Central Universities for reasons of legacy issues, adjustment of existing staffs and disaffiliation of affiliated colleges,” read a reply by Government of India.
Earlier in May this year, The Punjab and Haryana high court had directed the central government to consider the conversion of PU into a central university. The court sought a response from the Central Government after taking a “conscious decision” by August 30.
The Court sought the response while hearing a plea from a retired PU teacher, who retired at the age of 60 and sought an extension of service till 65 years.
Following the court order, the Punjab Vidhan Sabha passed a resolution against the attempt to alter the status of Panjab University (PU) into a Central University. The state government urged the Centre not to consider any change in the nature and character of the university.
Earlier in 2016, a single-judge HC bench had dismissed PU teachers’ plea with a similar demand.
