The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has launched the first Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) in the country. The launch was followed by the Olympism-themed curriculum that has been integrated into school education in Odisha.

The OVEP is a practical set of resources designed by the IOC to introduce young people to the Olympic values of excellence, respect and friendship. The programme aims to disseminate this values-based curriculum to help children become active, healthy and responsible citizens, the official communique stated.

The Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik officially launched the programme. In its first year, the programme aims to impact 32,000 children enrolled in 90 schools in the cities of Bhubaneswar and Rourkela and, once in full swing, it will reach around 7 million children.

The event which was held in virtual mode was also attended by the IOA president Narinder Batra, IOC member Nita Ambani, Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra, ministers and officials of Odisha, apart from officials of IOC. The Odisha Chief Minister said that sports are an integral and important part of the vision for education and personality development.

‘’We have always strived to achieve excellence in education as well as sports’’, said the Chief Minister, expressing his happiness to integrate both into the curriculum.

While speaking at the launch, Abhinav Bindra said, ‘’The practical implementation of Olympic values is the way forward. In the future, we will have better citizens than us."

‘’Only a small number of children in the world may become Olympians. But every child can be touched by the power of the Olympic movement. That is the mission of OVEP, and makes it a huge opportunity for India’’, said Nita Ambani.
