Panjab University begins reopening of departments in phased manner

Panjab University has begun reopening its departments in a staggered manner for offline classes. Physical classes were resumed for some batched at departments of biochemistry and biophysics and the dental college of Panjab University from Monday onwards, and more departments are set to follow.

While the University will reopen the Institute of Chemical Engineering Technology (UICET) from today, the departments of mathematics and physics will reopen from February 21 and 23, respectively. However, classes for first and second-year undergraduate students will continue in online mode for now.

Panjab University also announced that the undergraduate (final-year) and postgraduate (PG) students who were earlier allotted hostels will now be allowed to retain the accommodation and they may be allotted another room to ensure COVID SoPs are followed. Meanwhile, for the new students, the hostel accommodation will be provided on a merit basis.

PU had last week allowed departments to resume physical classes for postgraduate and undergraduate final year students immediately after the semester examination ends.

Meanwhile, Punjab Engineering College (PEC) also resumed the classes of BTech fourth semester students in physical mode, amid the decline in COVID-19 cases. The institute has already allowed the PhD, MTech and BTech students of sixth and eighth semesters to report back to campus. PEC director Baldev Setia said that the response from the students seemed good. “It may take some time to make a decision on further reopening of the campus,” he said.

Earlier, all educational institutions in the state were directed to remain closed for physical lectures until February 8, 2022. This decision regarding the extension of the closure was applicable to schools, colleges and all other educational institutions including coaching classes with exception of Medical and Nursing colleges that operate in the state.
