In the wake of the several vacant positions in Bihar's government medical colleges, the Patna high court has expressed its concern that these colleges may get derecognised.

In the present scenario, 2,083 out of the 3,309 posts of professors, assistant and associate professors is vacant in the government medical colleges which can lead to the derecognition of these colleges.

On Tuesday, while hearing two writ petitions filed by 11 teaching staff of these medical colleges, the bench of Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh made the oral observation in this regard.

Earlier, the Bihar health department had appointed these petitioners as professors, associate professors and assistant professors in these medical colleges. Those appointed as an associate and assistant professors were promoted to professor rank and despite becoming professors, later they were selected for the assistant professor through Bihar Public Service Commission.

The petitioners moved to the high court in December 2020 demanding the concerned authorities take into account their experience and appoint them as a professor as promoted earlier.

The court has asked the state government what steps are being taken to fill the vacant posts, and the court will hear the matter again on August 17.
