Plea in Rajya Sabha to regulate private medical colleges fees
A plea was made in the Rajya Sabha to regulate fees of private medical colleges with Congress leader Jairam Ramesh calling for increasing the number of GMCs.
On Wednesday, a plea was made in the Rajya Sabha to regulate fees of private medical colleges. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also demanded to increase in the number of Government Medical Colleges (GMCs).
He raised the issue through Zero Hour and said that nearly 53% of all medical institutions in India are government colleges and the remaining are private whose numbers have been increasing over the last few years.
“We must increase the population of government medical colleges (and) we must strictly regulate the fees of all medical institutions including private institutions,” he said, as reported by Indian Express.
Fee policy should be - learn now pay later
"The fee policy currently is to 'pay now learn later' but it should be 'learn now pay later, "he added, as reported by The News Minute.
"There is an acute shortage of medical doctors and public health professionals in this country," he said.
The belief that private medical education will form the foundation of medical education in this country is deeply, deeply flawed and deeply dangerous," he stressed.
The Central government is also running a centrally-sponsored scheme (CSS) for the establishment of new medical colleges attached to existing district/referral hospitals with preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts, where there is no existing government or private medical college. Under the CSS, a total of 157 new medical colleges have been approved in three phases, and 71 are already functional, as confirmed by Union health minister Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar.
