Russia-Ukraine Crisis: Indian Ambassador urges students, others to stay calm, Embassy is Operational
Indian Embassy has reached out to the Indian Diaspora and have requested them to assist Indians to the best of their abilities.
Amidst the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, the Indian Ambassador in Kyiv has issued a statement to Indians stranded in Ukraine and students, in particular, to stay calm. There are reports of hundreds of Indian students moving to Kyiv to return back to India.
There are over 20,000 Indian students in Ukraine right now. Partha Satpathy has appealed to Indian students who are stranded in Kyiv, to get in touch with their friends and colleagues in Kyiv, universities and other community members, so that they can temporarily lodge there.
There are reports that Indian Embassy has been shut down and Embassy staff are not answering calls from Indians. The Ambassador has stated that the Indian Embassy continues to remain open and operate in Kyiv.
“We are working on mission mode to find a solution to this difficult situation,” says Indian Ambassador to Ukraine Partha Satpathy.
In the morning Indian Embassy issued a statement asking Indians to not travel to Kyiv and remain wherever they are. Ambassador in his message has stated: “The situation is highly tense and very uncertain and this, of course, is causing a lot of anxiety. The air space is closed, railway schedules are in flux and roads are crammed. I would request everyone to stay calm and face the situation with fortitude.”
Urging Indians to remain wherever they are, Satpathy wrote: “The Embassy continues to remain open and operate in Kyiv. Under the circumstance, we have put out two advisories on the situation. I urge you to please stay wherever you are, in your familiar locations. Those who are in transit, please return to your familiar places of habitation. Those who are stranded here in Kyiv, please get in touch with your friends and colleagues in Kyiv, universities and other community members, so that you can temporarily lodge there. We have already reached out to the Indian Diaspora and have requested them to assist you to the best of their abilities.”
He further writes: “I am inundated with calls, so is the Embassy and we are doing our best to help. If there is a critical emergency, contact us on the emergency lines provided. Please follow our social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Website) for any updates that we will put out. As of now, the Government of India, Ministry of External Affairs and the Embassy of India are seized of the situation and working on a mission mode to find a solution to this difficult situation. I will reach out to you with more information.”
Leaders of various political parties and Chief Ministers of states like Kerala and Punjab have urged the central government to evacuate Indians stranded in Ukraine.
Earlier, this morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine adding that Moscow does not plan to occupy Ukraine. Russian President said the military action announced by him will seek to "demilitarize" Ukraine and came in response to threats from Ukraine.
Putin announced a military operation in Ukraine. Putin said: “I have made the decision of a military operation,” in a televised address.
