Safdarjung Hospital: Doctors association condemns notice to trainees, interns

After reportedly being denied admission to the Safdarjung Hospital (SJH), a woman delivered her baby outside the emergency wing of the hospital on Tuesday morning. After this, five doctors have been debarred from duties till the probe into the matter is completed.

On this whole incident, the Safdarjung Hospital has issued a statement that stated, "The woman was examined by the Senior Resident on duty at 5.45 pm on July 18 and she was found 33 weeks and 6 days pregnant with early labour. The patient was offered admission but she did not return with the admission paper."

"Next day, the senior resident on morning GRR duty was informed that a patient was delivering outside. A team from GRP was dispatched immediately and the patient’s delivery was taken care of,” added the statement.

VMMC Principal issues show cause notice to doctors

Prof Geetika Khanna, Principal VMMC issued a show cause notice to the intern and doctors. The notice stated that the matter has been viewed seriously by the administration and the doctors need to give an explanation within 24 hours on why necessary disciplinary action may not be initiated against the responsible intern and young doctors of PG's first and third year.

Now, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) Doctors Association has condemned this notice and tweeted, "We condemn the move by Prof. Geetika Khanna, Principal, VMMC for issuing show cause notice to innocent trainees & interns who have come to SJH to learn medicine. This is a small example of the reality of young doctors in India. Why Unit Heads/ HODs/ MS are not held accountable."

Dr Datta of AIIMS Delhi and also a former FAIMA member tweeted, "What crap is this??? The sole responsibility of ensuring adequate healthcare for its citizens lies on the government! Our governments have historically neglected our healthcare system. To hide their incompetency, without any proper enquiry, 3 Resident Doctors have been suspended!"
