Central Consumer Protection Authority established
Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) was established in New Delhi on July 24, 2020. It will work from the premises of the Indian Institute of Public Administration. The CCPA is established to promote, protect and enforce the rights of consumers as a class.
The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 has come into force from July 20, 2020. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), as provided in section 10 of the Act, has been established w.e.f. July 24, 2020.
Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) will be empowered to conduct investigations into violation of consumer rights and institute complaints/prosecution, order the recall of unsafe goods and services, order discontinuation of unfair trade practices and misleading advertisements, impose penalties on manufacturers/endorsers/publishers of misleading advertisements.
Sixth BRICS Environment Ministers’ meet calls for joint efforts of the economies
Union Environment Minister, Shri Prakash Javadekar addressed the 6th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting of the five BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China & South Africa) on July 30, 2020 via videoconference under the presidency of Russia.
Shri Javadekar highlighted in his address that in 2015, India launched the Air Quality index monitoring in 10 cities, today it has been extended to 122 cities. He also informed that India in 2019 launched the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), the goal of which is to reduce particulate pollution by 20-30 per cent relative to 2017 levels by 2024. India will assume the BRICS Presidency in 2021.
Nomination for “Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar” invited
Union Government had invited the nominations for the “Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar”. These awards are announced on the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on January 23 every year. The individuals, as well as the institutions, can nominate themselves and others. Nominations of Individuals and Institutions can be uploaded at “www.dmawards.ndma.gov.in” up to August 31, 2020.
The Government of India has instituted Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskaar to recognise the excellent work by the individuals and institutions in disaster management. Besides a certificate, these awards carry a cash award of Rs fifty-one lakhs for an Institution and Rs five lakhs for an Individual.
Adani Power Limited will get a 49% share of Odisha Power Generation Corporation Limited
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) approves proposed acquisition of 49% of the total equity share capital of Odisha Power Generation Corporation Limited (OPGC) by Adani Power Limited (APL).
APL is a public listed company at Bombay Stock Exchange Limited and the National Stock Exchange of India Limited. APL is primarily engaged in the business of power generation. It is a part of the Adani Group, which is inter-alia engaged in the business operations of generation, transmission and distribution of power in India.
OPGC, incorporated in Odisha, is a joint venture between Government of Odisha, AES India Private Limited and AES OPGC Holding and operates as a state government company. OPGC is engaged in the business of power generation.
Padma Shri Ren Sonam Tshering Lepcha passed away
The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi condoled the passing away of Padma Shri Ren Sonam Tshering Lepcha. The folk musician passed away at Kalimpong on July 30, 2020. He was a soldier in the initial days of his career. He toured various parts of Sikkim and compiled a wide range of Indian folk and traditional Lepcha songs and played folk music on All India Radio (AIR) in 1960.
In 1963, he staged his first Musical, “Teesta Rangeet” in Lepcha language. Ren. Sonam Tshering was honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1995. He dedicated his life in the revival of Lepcha culture of Sikkim.
Jin Liqun continue to be AIIB President for another term
The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) on July 28 informed that the AIIB board of governors has elected Jin Liqun for a second term as the president. AIIB President Jin’s second five-year term will begin January 16, 2021.
Narendra Modi and Mauritius counterpart inaugurated Supreme Court Building in Mauritius
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mauritius counterpart Pravind Kumar Jugnauth virtually inaugurated the new Supreme Court building in Mauritius on July 30, 2020. The new Supreme Court building is in Port Louis, Northern Mauritius.
