Amid the ongoing protest of students, the university authorities have reportedly contacted embassies of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations.
Its been over a month that the students of South Asian University (SAU) in Delhi are protesting for higher stipends and adequate representation in redressal committees. Classes have been suspended since October 13, 2022, due to the ongoing protests. Now, the university has reportedly contacted embassies and warned them that the students' actions can be seen as 'Anti-India'.
As per the report of The Print, Sri Lanka has confirmed that it received a “correspondence” from the university.
The SAU confirmed that it wrote to the High Commissions (of the countries from which the students sitting on a hunger strike hail) informing them of the matter. It, however, did not comment on the use of the phrase ‘anti-India’ activities.
Students are sitting on an indefinite hunger strike for more than 10 days and now their health condition is deteriorating, many reportedly were taken to the hospital for emergencies, wherein the hospital authorities also refused to take them in. "Blood sugar of at least five students dropped down to a critical level during the hunger strike but the administration has not even come to discuss the matter with us. Not only that, even the hospitals have refused to admit due to some process," Umesh Joshi, a PhD student of sociology said during a press conference, as reported by The Citizen.
The university is sponsored by the eight members — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka — of the South Asian grouping.
