Schools, colleges and other educational institutions in Punjab have been shut down for offline classes with immediate effect. The state government had announced fresh COVID-19 guidelines amid the rise in cases, especially of Omicron. The announcement has been made after the government led by Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi decided to have impose mini lockdown-like curbs in the state.
Earlier, Haryana had announced a complete shutdown of the schools, and it was speculated that Punjab will make a similar announcement soon. With a wave of COVID curbs being imposed across states, it was inevitable for Punjab too, to impose these restrictions.
In the last week, Punjab has reported an exponential rise in the COVID cases. On Monday, the state has reported more than 400 new COVID-19 infections, taking the tally to over 6 lakh.

However, no announcement has been made so far for students residing in college hostels. As of now, these restrictions are only applicable till January 15, 2022.
The government has also directed the district authorities to impose additional restrictions if required as per their wish. The move comes in wake of rise in COVID-19 cases and to contain the spread. Punjab Schools and colleges closing has been announced as children form a part of the vulnerable population and many are not yet vaccinated.
