Schools in Nagpur shut for Classes 1 to 8 until January 31

Considering the safety and health of students and staff members amid the rising cases of COVID-19 and its variant Omicron, Nagpur district decided to shut schools for Classes 1 to 8. 

Omicron Scare: All schools in Nagpur from Classes 1 to 8 will remain closed until January 31 amid the rising cases of the novel coronavirus, Dr Nitin Raut, Guardian Minister, Nagpur district informed. Earlier, the schools in Pune and Mumbai were also shut until January-end. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Government on Wednesday, January 5, also decided to discontinue physical classes in colleges until February 15, amid the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the state.

Talking about the decision to close colleges and universities, Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant said, “Amid rising COVID cases, Maharashtra govt to discontinue physical classes in colleges, universities till February 15. All exams in the said institutions to be conducted online till February 15.”

Earlier, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar announced that the schools in the Pune district will remain closed until January 30 for Classes 1 to 8 due to a spike in COVID-19 cases. The Minister made the announcement after attending the COVID-19 review meeting. He is also the guardian minister of the district. The Minister further announced that though the schools are closed the online teaching will continue for these classes.

“After prolonged discussions with officials of PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation), PCMC (Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation), and the district administration, we have decided to shut the schools for physical classes for Standard 1 to Standard 8,” said Pawar.

“State Health Minister Rajesh Tope has consulted with ICMR Director General Balram Bhargav who advised us to go ahead with the move in case positivity rate crosses 10 per cent. In Pune, the positivity percentage is about 18 per cent now,” he added.
