AMU requests students to not take admission to M.Phil; Urges authorities to stop admission

M.Phil: After University Grants Commission warned the students to not take admission to the M.Phil course as the course is not valid anymore, now Aligarh Muslim University has also told the students to not take admission in this particular course and it also directed the authorities to take immediate action to stop admissions to M.Phil. programme.

AMU tweet reads, "The university's authorities are requested to take immediate steps to stop admissions to M.Phil. programmes for the 2023-24 academic year. Further, students are advised not to take admission in M.Phil. Programme."

The M.Phil course is scrapped in line with the National Education Policy 2020.

UGC issued a notice stating that it observed that few universities are still inviting applications for admission to an M.Phil. degree. The Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations 2022. (https://www.usc.gov.inlpdfriews/09O9572-Minimum-Standards-and-Procedure-for-Award-ofPhD-Degree.pd0 clearly states that Higher Educational Institutions shall not offer M.Phil. program, said UGC notice.

M.Phil was a popular course option for postgraduate students who wanted to pursue a career in academics. For the last two to three academic sessions, many central and state universities have discontinued this course and now UGC made it clear that the course will not provide a valid degree to the students anymore. After the course is discontinued, now the postgraduates can choose to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) to make their career in academia or research.
