Education continues to be a top priority for the Delhi government as it announced a substantial allocation of Rs 16,396 crore for the sector in the budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, unveiled on Monday.
Presenting the budget in the Delhi Assembly, Finance Minister Atishi emphasized the government's commitment to providing quality education to the residents of the city. She underscored the significant transformation witnessed in government schools under the leadership of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
"In the last 10 years, major changes have been introduced in Delhi government schools. We doubled the budget for education in the national capital. Today we are proposing a budget of Rs 16,396 crore for education in Delhi," said Atishi, who also serves as the Education Minister.
Highlighting the stark improvement in the condition of Delhi government schools compared to the pre-Kejriwal era, Atishi credited the leadership for prioritizing education and ensuring necessary reforms.
"Atishi said former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia had played a significant role in improving the education scenario in Delhi," she added.
The minister further outlined the government's initiatives, including extensive teacher training programs and the regularization of nearly 48,000 teachers. She mentioned ongoing recruitment drives to fill 7,000 vacancies.
Under the Kejriwal government's tenure, student performance in government schools has seen remarkable enhancement, surpassing that of private institutions, Atishi noted.
Additionally, Atishi highlighted the expansion of seats in state-run universities by 20,000, accommodating a total of 93,000 students.
Presenting the budget with an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore for the fiscal year 2024-25, Atishi reiterated the government's commitment to realizing the vision of 'Ram Rajya', emphasizing inclusive growth and development across all sectors.
