A total of 8 central universities have been bestowed with graded autonomy, categorized into two groups, with 4 universities falling under Category I and the remaining 4 under Category II.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a public notice unveiling the list of Central Universities granted graded autonomy under the University Grants Commission (Categorization of Universities for Grant of Graded Autonomy) Regulations, 2018. This significant move aims to empower universities with greater administrative and academic freedom to enhance their overall quality and performance.
A total of 8 central universities have been bestowed with graded autonomy, categorized into two groups, with 4 universities falling under Category I and the remaining 4 under Category II.
Under Category I autonomy, the following universities have been granted autonomy:
- Central University of Rajasthan
- Central Sanskrit University, Janakpuri, New Delhi
- University of Delhi
- Central University of South Bihar
These universities will now enjoy a higher degree of autonomy in decision-making processes related to academic, administrative, and financial matters.
On the other hand, the universities granted Category II autonomy include:
- University of Hyderabad
- Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad
- Central University of Punjab
- Central University of Himachal Pradesh
While these universities also benefit from increased autonomy, it falls under a slightly different classification compared to Category I.
This move by the UGC underscores its commitment to fostering excellence and innovation in higher education institutions across the country. By granting graded autonomy, the UGC aims to encourage universities to develop and implement policies that are more responsive to the evolving needs of the education sector and society at large.
The decision to grant autonomy to these universities comes after a thorough evaluation process, taking into account various parameters such as academic performance, infrastructure, governance, and research output. This initiative is expected to pave the way for a more dynamic and responsive higher education ecosystem in India, empowering universities to chart their own course towards academic excellence and global competitiveness.
