GU ensured these students were no longer required to stay in the hostel and arranged for them to return to their respective countries. Out of the seven students, five students have complied with the directives already.

GU Asked Students to Vacate Hostel

Gujarat University (GU) have asked six students from Afghanistan and one student from East Africa to vacate the Gujarat University hostel a month after namaz row. Out of these, five students have already complied with the directive, the official confirmed.

The Afghan delegation, along with the Gambian delegation visited the university campus a few days after the March 16 attack and discussed safety measures with the vice-chancellor of the university.

Neerja Gupta, Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University said "Six students from Afghanistan along with one from East Africa have been asked to leave their hostel rooms as they were overstaying at the hostel premises. These students have completed their studies and few of them are left with administrative work, for which, staying in a hostel is not entitled.”

The university ensured that these students were not required to live in the hostel and could return to their respective countries.

Gujarat University currently has approximately 180 international students studying at several departments of the university. The university, after the recent controversy, has tightened its rules in response to overstaying at the hostel after completion of coursework, as reported by TOI.

What Has Happened?

The recent order came into highlight in the wake of an Afghan student controversy who were engaged with a local group over offering namaz in the open at the premises of the hostel.  Around two dozen people entered the Gujarat University's hostel premises on March 16 and assaulted foreign country students for offering namaz during the month of Ramzan. Out of the victims, two students from Tajikistan and Sri Lanka were hospitalised after the assault.
