The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru known for its science and research activity in the country is all set to teach medical education from next year. The institute has planned to start a postgraduate medical school next year.
IISc Director Govindan Rangarajan during the annual convocation ceremony said that after about 100 years of excellence in science and engineering, IISc is planning to start a postgraduate medical school on campus.
Govindan Rangarajan speaking about the institute’s 100-year long journey said that it began in 1909 with the chemistry division, shortly adopted by electrical know-how and natural chemistry division.
“Even though we are called Indian Institute of Science, right from the beginning, we have had both science and engineering equally represented. Twelve years ago, a lot of interdisciplinary departments were created. Now, starting next year, we are planning yet another change. After about 100 years of excellence in science and engineering, we are planning to start a postgraduate medical school on campus,” he stated.
Earlier in May this year, the then Union Minister of Education Ramesh Pokhriyal, chairing a gathering with the heads of IISc, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) suggested for a multi-disciplinary approach to education as per the National Education Policy – 2020 and also said that IISc and IIT Kharagpur would be soon starting with courses in medical sciences.
During an interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, IISc Director talked about the institute's ambitious plan to set up a PG medical school and research hospital.
