JNU is contemplating returning to the in-house PhD entrance exam to accept students for PhD course admission amidst the recent NTA UGC NET issue.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is likely to reinstate conducting its own PhD entrance examination after the abrupt cancellation of the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) exam. The university may end the responsibility of conducting the test in association with the National Testing Agency (NTA) due to the ongoing debate on the UGC NET controversy underway.
At the latest turn of events, the university has started the process and considering the stakeholders' opinions prior to finalising the decision. Just a few months ago, the university planned to admit PhD students at the university on the basis of UGC NET scores in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020, instead of the NTA entrance exam to select PhD students. However, the unanticipated cancellation of the June 2024 NET has made the authorities reconsider the decision to accept NET scores for JNU PhD admission, as reported by Indian Express.
Consequently, Jawaharlal Nehru University has initiated a discussion about reviving the in-house entrance examination which has been ratified by the JNU's Teacher Association (JNUTA) as an acquittal of the PhD admission process.
Previously, the Central Government, on June 19, cancelled the UGC NET June session examination following inputs from the Ministry of Home Affairs 9MHA) on the grounds of compromise with the integrity of the examination.
