A team of researchers from Shoolini University, Himachal Pradesh has been given a grant through Microsoft Artificial Intelligence (AI) for a health programme to conduct research on finding a drug to cure and prevent coronavirus.

The project has been funded through High-Performance Computing  (HPC) consortium. The team will be led by Dr. Gurjot Kaur, Associate Professor, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Shoolini University. The team will get access to Microsoft Azure credits for the next six months to perform research using Microsoft licensed resources, both online platforms and virtual machines.

The team will perform screening of phytochemical constituents for anti-viral activity through interacting with coronavirus specific targets using modeling studies. Indian medical herbs have the same or similar phytoconstituents and can be useful as anti-COVID-19 medicine.

This project will directly have an impact on the anti-viral drug development for coronavirus and thus it has a very high impact.

Talking about the research, Dr. Kaur said that the number of coronavirus cases in the country is increasing at a fast pace. The social distancing norm and lockdown will not serve the long-term solutions for the spreading pandemic. A more feasible idea will be to invest in the development of medical drugs both for prophylaxis and for the treatment of patients who are already infected with the virus.

Many of the existing anti-viral medications have been used to slow or even cure the severely affected patients and thus, decrease the mortality rate. However, none of the medication strategies are optimum and it will take more than a year to develop a medicine to cure coronavirus infected patients, she added.

Approved by the University Grants Commission, Shoolini University is a top-ranked private university where students have filed more than 400 patents so far. The University was ranked 34 among top Indian institutions of higher learning by SCIMAGO Institutions Ranking in 2020.
