PAU initiates Comprehensive review; Sets aggressive research goals

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, has embarked on an in-depth research review across various departments. The initiative, led by the Director of Research, aims to meticulously assess achievements, identify challenges, and outline future thrusts to fortify research endeavours at PAU, a critical mandate for the institution

The comprehensive review, spanning from August 2019 to July 2023, involves a granular evaluation at the individual scientist level. The exercise, conducted across all departments, commenced in October 2023, with the review of nine departments in the College of Basic Sciences and select departments from the College of Community Science already completed. Additionally, five out of six departments in the College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology underwent review during the preceding week.

The objectives of this proactive measure include following up on recommendations from the 2018-19 review, conducting a SWOT analysis for future planning, making adjustments in the research agenda, and addressing challenges related to research funding, staff position, and resource deployment.

On February 17, 2024, the initial phase of the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics review focused specifically on scrutinizing the Wheat and Rice sections. Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, the Vice-Chancellor of PAU, actively participated, emphasizing the importance of targeting nutritional traits in wheat and low biomass traits in rice for in-situ management. He urged scientists to elevate basmati rice breeding to match the standards set by IARI and recommended studies on vectors and alternate hosts of the Southern rice black-streaked dwarf virus. Dr. Gosal also committed to addressing staffing-related issues promptly.
