Punjab University Grants ‘Menstrual Leave' for Students; Know How Many Leaves Per Semester Allowed

Punjab University approves menstrual leave for female students from the upcoming semester of academic session 2024-25. A maximum of four leaves per semester will be granted to students. 

Punjab University Menstrual Leave

Punjab University (PU) students are now eligible to apply for 'Menstrual leaves' at the university. By implementing this rule, Punjab University has become the very first university in the region to grant menstrual leave to female students. 

The vice chancellor of Punjab University, Renu Vig has passed the circular stating menstrual leaves will be implemented from the upcoming semesters for the academic session 20-24-25, as reported by News 18. 

On April 10, 2024, Rumina Sethi, Dean of the University instructions, issued a circular that contained terms and conditions for taking menstrual leaves. 

Punjab University Menstrual Leave Guidelines

The following are the guidelines that shall be adhered to by students taking menstrual leave at Punjab University: 

  • Students are entitled to take one day leave 'per calendar month of teaching' where teaching was done for 15 days or more. 
  • A maximum of four leaves per semester shall be granted to each student subject to the teaching days criteria. 
  • The menstrual leaves will not be granted during any examination days such as the mid-semester exams, end-semester exams, practical exams or internal/ external exams.  

How to Apply for Menstrual Leave? 

Students willing to take Punjab University Menstrual leave will have to fill out a respective form at the department office. Students must apply for leave on or before five working days from the date of leave. The permission will be granted to students subject to the fulfilment of terms and notifications issued by the department and the self-certification of the student.
