Good Samaritan Law

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has notified the guidelines for the protection of people who need emergency care during road accidents. The guidelines have been notified at the direction of the Supreme Court of India. Consequently, the ministry urged Higher Education to raise awareness among the students and staff about the Good Samaritan Law and raise awareness among them.

The authorities have notified that lots of people lose their lives in road accidents because of not getting timely medical care. Besides, people remain silent and refrain from being witnesses in such accidents in order to avoid police and legal proceedings. As per the statistics, more than 50% of accident victims lose their life because of not getting medical treatment during the first hour of the accident. It further said that instant and appropriate first aid during this hour increases the chance of survival manifold and reduces the severity of injuries. Here comes the use of Good Samaritan Law which protects individuals who provide emergency care without hoping for the amount of money involved.

Further, the Higher Education Institutions have been urged to educate students and staff of their respective colleges/universities to help accident victims without fear and also requested the HEIs to encourage awareness in the local community.
