Despite multiple requests from UGC, as many as 228 universities are yet to appoint ombudsperson, says UGC.
UGC has released the list of defaulting universities that have not appointed an Ombudsperson(S). A total of 228 universities still to appoint the Ombudsperson(S). The universities were requested to appoint within 30 days of the notification of the Regulations vide letter dated April 12, 2023, followed by several reminders.
The Commission has said that any university who have already appointed ombudsperson (S) but finds their name in the list may write to UGC.
"The Universities and their affiliated Colleges are requested to display the particulars and contact details of the Ombudsperson(s) and Students Grievance Redressal Committee (SGRC) on their websites and at prominent places on their campuses," reads the UGC statement.
Universities have been instructed to share the complete details of ombudsperson to the following email IDs:
- In case of a central university: mssarma.ugc@nic.in
- In case of a state university: smitabidani.ugc@nic.in
- In case of a deemed to be university: jitendra.ugc@nic.in
- In case of a private university: shakeel.ugc@nic.in
The updated list of defaulting state universities as of March 12, 2024, includes a total of 159 universities. Defaulting private universities include a total of 67 universities and the list of defaulting deemed to be universities includes a total of two universities. In its last year's notification, UGC also said that the universities should comply with the regulations by establishing the Students Grievance Redressal Committee (SGRC).

Among the highlights of the programme will be the participation of students from over 60,000 institutions. I would urge youngsters, and particularly those passionate about tech, to join tomorrow's programme," reads a message on X by PM Narendra Modi.
