49 Hyderabad University students included in COVID-19 containment fieldwork

Around fifteen students who are pursuing the second semester of master of public health volunteered for the work.

The University of Hyderabad (UoH) students pursuing public health drafted by the government of Telangana in the fieldwork related to controlling the COVID-19 spread in the state. According to the reports, the Telangana government deployed these students to carry out epidemiological fieldwork in various districts of the state as a part of its containment strategy to combat the novel coronavirus spread.

Hyderabad University confirmed the report by publishing a press release on its official website. According to the press release, around fifteen students who are pursuing the second semester of master of public health volunteered for the work. The district authorities issued the order and confirmed their participation in active and passive surveillance teams.

Along with these fifteen students, four research scholars and another 30 students, including current MPH seniors and alumni, also submitted their credentials to the government. The group of students offered to work for the humanitarian cause. Their spirit of volunteerism and humanitarian gesture towards the society received appreciation from the Telangana government. The government not only praised their initiative but also promised to consider them for future placements.

In order to contain the spread of the contagious virus, the government of Telangana, through the office of the director for public health and family welfare of the ministry of health started implementing a state-wide surveillance and containment strategy. The strategy is set in line with the recommendation of WHO for global surveillance strategy for human infection with coronavirus that includes: monitoring trends where human-to-human virus transmission occurs, conducting risk assessment at the national, regional, and global level by providing epidemiological information, detecting areas in countries where the virus is not circulating, and providing epidemiological information to guide preparedness and response measures.
