Tamil Nadu Assembly adopts anti-NEET bill again
This is for the first time in the history of the Tamil Nadu Assembly that a bill returned by the Governor has been readopted by the House.
The Tamil Nadu Assembly has once again adopted the bill against the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) to admit students to undergraduate courses in medicine.
Governor RN Ravi had recently returned the Tamil Nadu Admission to Undergraduate Medical Degree Courses Bill to the Assembly and said that it goes against the interests of students belonging to poor economic backgrounds. This is for the first time in the history of the Tamil Nadu Assembly that a bill returned by the Governor has been readopted by the House.
A special assembly session was convened to adopt the bill again. All political parties, except the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), supported the bill. The bill to scrap NEET was previously passed in September 2021. It will now be sent to Governor RN Ravi again. The Governor has to give his assent to the bill and send it to the President. The bill requires the President’s assent before it can become a law.
A copy of the letter sent by the Governor to Speaker M Appavu was placed before the assembly today. Governor Ravi termed the report as one that merely reflects the jaundiced view of the high-level committee.
