Tamil Nadu: SIRPI launched for government school students

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin launched the 'Students in Responsible Police Initiatives (SIRPI)' for government school students. It will be first rolled out by Greater Chennai police.

Under this initiative, officers will offer classes in physical fitness, sports and drills to inculcate discipline and social awareness among students from a young age, as reported by Hindustan Times.

During his speech after launching SIRPI, Mr Stalin said there was a need to create awareness among students against drugs and alcoholism.

“Although we are developing, on the one hand, we have to eradicate some social problems. Awareness will be created for students on eradication of drugs, action against alcoholism, giving them legal awareness, and helping them communicate with government, non-governmental organisations and the public,” said Stalin.

He had announced on the floor of the Assembly that SIRPI would be implemented with an outlay of INR 4.25 crore and 50 students in each of 100 government schools were to benefit.

Students will be given a book related to the activities and nutritious meals during classes. “Senior police officers have told me that they will also be touring the students to eight designated spots,” Stalin said.

“When youngsters are moulded this way, we can create a better society. We know that when police and people are together, crimes will not just reduce but crimes can be prevented from happening,” he added.

Information Minister MP Saminathan, Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments PK Sekarbabu, Minister for School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Mayor of Greater Chennai Corporation R. Priya, Chief Secretary V. Irai Anbu, Director-General of Police C. Sylendrababu were also present.
