IISc to start four-year B.Sc.-B-Ed course to produce high-quality teachers

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) plans to start a four year integrated B.Sc.-B-Ed programme to train teachers for schools.

Prof Govindan Rangarajan, Director, IISc Bangalore speaking at the visitor’s conference said that the Integrated Teachers' Education Programme (ITEP) launched under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a great initiative. He said: “Without training excellent school teachers the country is not going to move forward as far as science and technology is concerned.”

He said that leading education institutions should come forward in this initiative and in this direction IISc under the ITEP programme is going to launch B.Sc.-B-Ed programme. He informed that this will be a four-year programme.

He further added that by starting such programmes institutions like IISc can set an example of training high-quality teachers.

Rangarajan was speaking during the inaugural session of the sixth edition of the Visitor’s conference. President Ram Nath Kovind, who is also the Chancellor of central universities is hosting the Visitor’s Conference 2022 at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. President Kovind will present the Visitor’s Awards 2020 in the categories of Research and Technological Development.

The two-day Conference will witness presentations and deliberations on various topics such as international rankings of Higher Education Institutions, the collaboration between the Academia-Industry and policy-makers, and education and research in emerging and disruptive technologies.

The President is the visitor of 161 Central Institutes of Higher Education. Apart from the heads of these institutions, Education and Skill Development Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also attended the Conference, along with University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) Chairman.
