UGC urges HEIs to promote organ donation among students, faculty

University Grants Commission has written to Higher Education Institute and requested them to promote organ donation among students, faculty and staff.

UGC's letter highlighted the huge shortage of organs as compared to the requirement which resulted in wide gap between organ demand and supply in our country.

"A donor after Brain Stem Death can donate up to 8 vital organs namely 2 Lungs, Pancreas, and small instestine and many tissues like Cornea (Eye), Bone, Skin, Heart valves etc. Thus, one such donor can save up to 8 to 9 lives through organ donation and improve the quality of life of many other through such donation. Organ Donation is best possible after certification of brain stem death before the heart stops," reads UGC's letter.

Anyone of the age 18 years and above can pledge for Organ donation by visiting NOTTO web-portal notto.abdm.gov.in. A 24X7 toll-free helpline no. 1800114770 is functional for providing any guidance related to pledging process or for any information on organ donation. The HEIs are requested to disseminate the information among students, faculty and staff.
