Telangana CM gives nod to upgrading Koti Women's college to University

The Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) along with the collegiate and technical education department is in the process of compiling a report, that would give away all the details on the academics and infrastructure in the college.

With the proposal to convert Koti Women's college into University getting the nod from the Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar, it is likely that the varsity will soon be a reality by the academic year 2022-23. The proposal to convert the college into University was first floated in February 2018. The Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) along with the collegiate and technical education department is in the process of compiling a report, that would give away all the details on the academics and infrastructure in the college.
“We have to find out details pertaining to the courses, faculty members, student accommodation and infrastructure. Once we submit the report to the education ministry after speaking to all the stakeholders, the same shall be considered to pass an Act in the state Assembly, without which no state university can be established,” said R Limbadri, TSCHE chairman.

At present, the Koti Women's college offers 19 undergraduate courses and 20 postgraduate courses, with 29 and 17 departments. Along with this, the college also offers some certificate and self-financed courses too. With the government planning to convert the college into a university, Telangana education minister Sabitha Indra Reddy has instructed officials to explore the possibilities of introducing special women-centric courses.
Once the Act is passed in the state Assembly, the established university can then approach various central funding agencies for funds.

“Four years back, the government had proposed to sanction a budget of Rs 34-37 crore for the establishment of the university. Now, the budget is likely to be enhanced to Rs 100 crore. Not just this, since we would also complete 100 years in 2024, we would be seeking funds from the University Grants Commission at a later stage,” said Prof M Vijjulatha, principal of Koti Women’s College.
