TN anti-NEET bill: Centre seeks clarifications from state

Tamil Nadu government is seeking exemption from the entrance examination NEET for admission into medical courses MBBS and BDS. The state wants these admissions to occur on the basis of Class 12 marks. The state Cabinet passed an anti-NEET bill for the same and sent it twice to Governor to be forwarded for President's assent and eventually, the Governor forwarded the same. Now, the centre has asked for clarifications from the state government on this bill. The Union Home Ministry has sought clarifications from CM MK Stalin-led government, Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra said a bill namely ‘The Tamil Nadu Admission to Undergraduate Medical Degree Courses Bill, 2021’, reserved by the governor of Tamil Nadu, for consideration and assent of the President of India was received in the home ministry on May 2, 2022, as reported by Indian Express.

“The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of AYUSH furnished their ‘comments’ on the bill which have been shared with the government of Tamil Nadu on June 21, 2022, and June 27, 2022, respectively for their comments and clarifications,” he said replying to a written question in Lok Sabha.

TN govt says NEET favours wealthy students

Earlier, the state government had established a committee on NEET whose finding says that NEET drives away poor students and favours aspirants from affluent families. The committee also opined that these rich aspirants, later on, go abroad for further studies or practice but do not contribute to the health services in rural areas and hence this leads to the shortage of health care providers in rural areas. The state government also claims that due to this reason, many young medical aspirants from poor families commit suicide every year.
