The University Grants Commission on April 29 announced an extension of six months to be granted to MPhil, PhD students. The Commission further added that Universities may conduct the MPhil and PhD Viva -Voce examinations through video conferencing using Skype, Google, Microsoft Technologies or any other reliable and mutually convenient technology. While talking about the intermediate semesters, the Commission suggested that practical examinations may be conducted during the ensuing semesters.
In terms of end semester examinations, the UGC added that end semester examinations would be conducted in universities in the month of July. The commission also asked universities to constitute a dedicated COVID-19 cell will be empowered to solve the issues of students related to academic calendar and examinations. States, where situation affected by the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, is under control, UGC recommended them to conduct July exams. The University Grants Commission added, “Intermediate Semester students will be graded based on the internal assessment of the present and previous semester.”
It further stated, "Universities may adopt alternative and simplified modes and methods of examinations to complete the process in a shorter period of time. Universities may adopt efficient and innovative modes of examinations by reducing the time from 3 hours to 2 hours.”
The changed guidelines came after the nationwide lockdown imposed due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus led to the suspension of classes, postponement of exams and delayed the next academic session.
Considering the ongoing pandemic situation, UGC suggested universities to begin the new academic session for new admission/freshers from September and for already enrolled students in August.
