A principal of a government primary school in Uttar Pradesh was suspended after students were served rice with salt as a mid-day meal, officials said on Wednesday.
Students eating rice with salt surfaced over social media
The incident took place at the government school in the district's Bikapur Tehsil. According to the officials, a video of the incident showing students eating rice with salt was also widely shared on social media. The parents of the students also staged a protest outside the school.
Enquiry against incident ordered
Ayodhya District Magistrate Nitish Kumar, said, "The incident took place on Tuesday. I have ordered an enquiry into the incident. "The enquiry will be conducted by Basic Siksha Adhikari (BSA). The principal has also been suspended."
Students forced to sit on sacks, mid-day meal not as per fixed menu
Parents alleged that the students are forced to sit on sacks during mid-day meals. They further alleged that the students do not get mid-day meals according to the fixed menu and the principal of the school is often absent.
Meanwhile, reports of food poisoning after consuming mid-day meals are also sparking controversy in other states. Last month, around 50 students of a government middle school in Bihar fell ill after consuming the midday meal. The incident took place at Jagdishpur Saino middle school. The students also claimed that a lizard fell into the vegetables during the cooking, and even then the school administration served the vegetables along with other food to them. After eating, the students complained about stomach aches and vomiting. When information reached the parents, they immediately rushed to the school and took their children to the primary health centre in Jagdishpur.
