What is the JEE Advanced Attempt Limit Case?
The JAB, responsible for overseeing the JEE Advanced admissions to the esteemed Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), announced a policy change on November 5, 2024, increasing the number of attempts to three. However, only days later, on November 18, 2024, the authority reversed this decision and reinstated the previous limit of two attempts per candidate.
What is the Plea?
To challenge this sudden change in JEE Advanced attempt limit a group of 22 JEE aspirants have approached SC. The petitioners contend that the sudden change has caused them considerable hardship, as many had begun preparing for the exam under the assumption that a third attempt would be allowed. The petition emphasizes that several candidates had already registered for the JEE Main exam, enrolled in coaching programs, and made significant adjustments to their academic plans, including withdrawing from other college courses and cancelling SAT registrations, all based on the belief that the new attempt limit would apply. Additionally, the petitioners argue that the decision made by the JAB was arbitrary, lacked transparency, and was implemented without adequate consultation or the involvement of relevant stakeholders.
The petitioners have urged the Supreme Court to direct the authorities to annul the press release issued on November 18, 2024, and allow all students who passed Class XII in 2023 to be eligible for JEE Advanced 2025 under the new attempt limit.
As per the official website and the JEE Advanced 2025 information brochure, the current attempt limit is two attempts within two consecutive years. This means candidates who appeared for JEE Advanced in 2023 are ineligible for the 2025 exam, while those who first appeared in 2024 can attempt it again in 2025.
