Amid the scorching heatwave that various parts of India are facing, the state government of West Bengal has decided to extend summer vacations in schools until June 26. The decision has come as a relief for various parents and students. Meanwhile, the extension of summer vacations will not be implied for schools in hilly areas of the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts, the state government in its latest notification stated.
Principal Secretary, Department of Education, West Bengal, Manish Jain explained that the decision to extend summer break in the state has been taken keeping in mind the safety of students. The state has reported several deaths due to severe heatwave in the region. The official release regarding the extension reads, "With regard to declaring summer vacation in the schools due to extreme heatwave conditions, as reports of a few death cases due to heat and humidity have been received, the competent authority has decided to extend the summer vacation...”
The notice was issued to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and the West Bengal Board of Primary Education. Earlier, due to the hot and humid climate, the government has already extended the summer vacation in schools from mid-April, owing to the hot and humid conditions. The notice comes a day after the death of three elderly pilgrims during a religious function at Panihati due to heat. Several states have been badly struck by severe heatwaves. States including the National Capital have asked the citizens to take necessary precautions while heading out of their homes.
