West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Partha Chatterjee, a minister in the Mamata Banerjee-led government, in connection with the West Bengal teacher recruitment scam. Chatterjee’s close aide Arpita Mukherjee has also been taken into custody by the ED.

Partha Chatterjee was heading the education ministry in West Bengal government till 2021. Chatterjee held the education portfolio when the alleged scam was done. The minister of state for education had also been grilled by the CBI with his daughter losing her job as a school teacher.

ED continued its raid on Saturday at the residential premises of Arpita Mukherjee, in connection with an alleged teacher recruitment scam in the state.

Partha Chatterjee has been arrested today after ED started the raids at Arpita Mukherjee’s premise on Friday where it seized cash amounting to around Rs 21 crore. Reportedly, the ED has also found, documents pertaining to around 10 properties, gold and diamond ornaments worth over Rs 50 lakh at Arpita Mukherjee’s house.

The ED’s money-laundering case is a result of an FIR filed by the CBI, which was filed as per the instructions from the Calcutta High Court, which asked the agency to investigate the alleged scam in the recruitment of Group ‘C’ and ‘D’ staff, assistant teachers of classes 11 and 12 and primary level.

As per a statement by Enforcement Directorate: “The said amount is suspected to be proceeds of crime of the said SSC scam." Several notes were found in an envelope of the West Bengal education ministry with the national emblem printed on them.

Monalisa Das, a professor of Bengali at Kazi Nazrul University, is also under the ED radar as she is also suspected to have amassed properties and has links with Chatterjee.
